School Camp was Great

At camp we had lots of fun playing games. One of the games was called, Tails but the best one out of all of them was, Jail Break. I loved jail break even though I was puffing and huffing!

Now I will tell you how to play jail break:

1. Firstly you need a big space to play Jail Break.

2. You need 5 or 6 people.

3. Two people to be chosen as the cops and the rest are robbers and the robbers are to hide outside because if they go inside they're disqualified.

When camp was over I could not stop crying at night because I missed my friends but I eventually did stop!

At camp, Room 1 had an epic time doing lots of games eg: Crazy swing, dodgeball, tails, and Jail Break. I loved every thing apart from the mud run because I was scared of the spiders!

There were lots of people in my cabin like Annabel, Anna, Hannah, Kaitlin, Nadia and Tabatha.

When I went abseiling I received a nickname. It was 'Beanstalk.' I hated it. Evan, our camp leader, gave it to me because my real nickname is Jak - spelt a different way.

At push kart racing I was pushed so far that I wasn't in the mud - I was in the water! It was the most greatest time of my life!

Mud run fun

Our School camp was great! We did a mud run, with lots of water and a lot of mud 74 cm deep. We had to go through again to find my shoe but no one found it! So I got a piggy back on Mr Price and then I got a piggy back on James' dad Richard.

Also we did a game called 'Tails'. You play like this, you have three lives (the three lives are strips of material, that you tuck unto your pants and have one on each side of you

and one as a tail). We had to verse the adults. It was tricky but fun. In fact it was so much fun!

I slept in a cabin with Anna and some other people.

We went to bed at around nine p.m and on one night we went to bed at ten p.m.

The people who ran the camp were Pete and very, very, very, cheeky, Evan who splashed

very cold water on me and tipped Anna out of her kayak she was using.

We also did a gunge fight that was after the mud run.

In the gunge fight the colours were pink, green, blue, yellow and a little bit of white gunge.

That was camp.

We all had a great time. I really loved camp.

At camp we had lots of fun doing activities like 4 wheel drive pioneering and a game called Tails. For some people the mud run was terror. But we had lots of yummy food thanks to the chefs including Tracey, Richard and Paul. There were five bunk rooms. At search and rescue we had to rescue Zack, Mrs Marr and Mrs Henderson.

List of activities: The mud run, push kart racing, Abseiling, Treasure hunt, Bush walk, Dodge ball, Tails and many more great games.

Today Jess and I scouted the school to find news for the Number Ones blog. When we crept into the new entrants class to see them learning maths, we witnessed them counting up to 20 on number lines. When we tiptoed into Room 5 to see the Science table, we observed little doctors making an eyeball. We dashed over to Room 4 to see a wall with Flanimals they created. They are animals that Room 4 made by themselves...they made them up!

We continued to Music to listen to Room 5 sound like screaming banshees! Finally back to Room 1 to glimpse at Naveen, Samuel and Beth playing Multiplication and Division Bingo.

Welcome to Room Ones Blog

We recently had a Sports day at the Edger Center. The sports day was based on the FIFA world cup.

All of the classes had their own country who participated in the World Cup and the classes had to dress up in the countries colours.

We learnt about different sports and techniques. The sports that we learnt were Ripper Rugby, Hockey, Football, Futsal, Rob The Nest, Netball, Volleyball, T’ball and Cricket.

Our favourite sport was Football and Hockey.

In Room 1 we have been learning about ANZAC which stands for Australia New Zealand Army Corporation. We wrote diary entries of what life would’ve been like in the trenches as a soldier in the war.

The writing expressed the 5 senses –touch, taste, smell sight and sound. We used ANZAC slang words to add to the accent/authencity.

Room 4 do sign language every day before news time. We learned ‘I feel happy’. This week it is New Zealand Sign Language Week. Ella knows how to do sign language, but today she was too busy playing with the pirates. Room 6 and 8 are growing beans in jars with damp tissues. One of them is already growing.

Room 6 and 8 children got a chocolate coin after reading about “Jack and the Beanstalk”. They are writing stories about what they would like to find at the top of the beanstalk. In Room 8 they have number stories on the leaves of their Beanstalk. The castle at the top nearly touches the ceiling!

These are the possible areas for the climbing wall:

This term room 1 moved back into the ‘old room 1’. We had a few problems with desk groups but we have moved the two desk groups at the back into a sort-of square horseshoe. The two desk groups at the front are still the same. We have got the new carpet (which is blue with multicoloured dots). We also have this, deep red vertiface for the walls.

The production is coming up and we might be doing it about the Anzac soldiers at war! Hope it goes well!

These are some comments about the new classroom from some of the people in our class:

R1 are just waiting for the sliding doors to be lodged in between the two new classrooms. How exciting!

I’ts taken about 2 months for the refurbishments to be completed.

Opoho Cricket Team Smash at the Cricket Tournament!

On March the 17th, Opoho sent 10 children to a cricket fun day at the Edgar Centre.

They won all of their games!

They stormed ahead to beat North East Valley School in their first two games.

In their third game they played a mixed team that had three parents in it!

Welcome to Opoho school. This week is walk and wheel week. So far we have found out that this Tuesday in Room 1: Fifteen people walked and wheeled to school, Room 6 and Room 8 had 14 people, Room 4 had 14 people, Room 3 had 17 people, and surprisingly Room 5 hod 25 out of 27 people!

OPOHO SCHOOL REFURBISHMENT

We asked Mrs Clarke why she is having Room 1 and 2 refurbished and she replied that the last time the classes were refurbished was in 1985. That was 25 Years ago.

We asked if there is going to be a deck and she said, no but there might be a big sun shade overhead.
The build is ahead of time and will be finished in mid-March.

This Week’s Blog Report

In Room 6 & 8 they have been writing stories about the trip to the gardens. This is a shared story that they wrote:

We went on an adventure… We went to the gardens. Thomas saw a peacock.
We had a picnic for morning tea. We played in the playground. We fed the ducks. We had a sausage for lunch.
We went in the pool. We met our whanau buddies. We had an ice-block. We went home on the bus. It was fun!

In Room 5 they have been learning about Brain Sciences and the five senses. They have a Build-a-Brain kit that you can assemble. Also, they have a new student teacher for the year called Ms King.

In Room 4 they have been learning about life cycles and have been watching one live in their class by having a caterpillar on a swan plant, which is now a chrysalis.

At Room 2 they have been writing all about themselves in their ‘Me writing’

I have a little sister and she always tries to take my toys. My younger brother now tries to hit me. My house is very busy and it makes me dizzy but that’s not all! I’ve got my own bedroom and my own couch and a blue computer. I’ve got a mum and she always goes for a run and when she comes back she is red. You know dad. He’s always playing sports and wrestling me. The only thing when I have quiet time is our best TV show ‘Upsidaisy.’

WELCOME BACK - IT'S 2010!!!!!

Hello!!! I hope you all got my letter and are looking forward to getting back into it on Tuesday. I am so excited about seeing you all! We have had the most gorgeous spell of weather the past week and today has been a real beauty. We have spent the morning at the Brighton Gala Day with the Gaffaneys. It was stunning out there!
While you are getting back into school mode...dont forget to bring back your sunhat. I have had a big tidy up and the classroom is all set up for you...when you get there on Tuesday...see if you can find your desk! Its going to be a squeeze but Room 8 is a lovely classroom and very sunny and warm!
Year 6's - please remember to bring back your road patrol notice as Constable Rei is going to be training you on Tuesday afternoon.
Year 5's - we will go out for a game (weather permitting) while they are training. There are so many of you who just love playing sports!
Try to remember to bring any spare books etc to school with you on Tuesday and Wednesday so that we can sort out the stationery before the end of the week.
Finally - we want to make this Blog yours! Be thinking about a groovy name or any cool ideas you might have to make our Blog special to us this year. I collect ideas from you during the week.

TEMPERATURE INVESTIGATIONS

Recently we have been investigating temperature and weather around the world. We chose a few cities and countries and found out all we could about the weather and temperatures there in that particular week. We then went on to present our information. We were very creative about how we did this. Check out this weather report by Neve and Aria.

Discovery!

Discovery started up again last Friday and we had a week of old favourites and a few new discoveries. Mr Bonney was back with Blue Screen and a few of us made a movie - Rollercoaster to the Moon. We made pompoms with Eileen and looked at how we could turn these into creatures. There was plenty of science action in R2, our regular visit to the SPCA and Garage Band. This week we are having more of a maths focus and have visitors in to show us how to make rockets and test theories of distance and force; paper planes you have NEVER seen before and many maths based discoveries!
We are still looking for ideas and adults for Discovery for the rest of the term. Please let us know if you can help in anyway. We are looking for sewing machines we can use at school too.

Blue Oyster Art Gallery

Last Tuesday the first group of students went off to the Blue Oyster Art Gallery. This workshop was based on the found material sculptures of Kate Boocock. Kate’s work is made from everyday objects, which she constructs into post-environmental disaster, cityscapes. The gallery had planned a workshop where students investigated, discussed and interpreted Kate’s work and then based on the knowledge of her intentions and methods, they made their own sculptures in the gallery from provided materials.
They all had a lot of fun making their sculptures and are very keen to go back again!

Hi everyone...I hope you are having a fantastic holiday...you only have one day left! Make the most of it!
I've been up to school for a few days, visited the Alexandra Resource Centre and managed to get a few great resources! I've been also setting up some very exciting 'investigations' as part of our chocolate inquiry.
Over the weekend - look around for any chocolate wrappers and any spectacular autumn leaves you may have found. Bring these into school next week.

TERM 1 VISIT TO DUNDAS BUSH

On Monday we walked down to Dundas Bush to have lunch, play and to also take note of anything that needed 'doing' for future visits.
After walking around the track we noticed that it was very overgrown, in need of a few trees trimmed, replanting, thinning and water testing of the creek. Zenith mentioned that we may need some more wood chips along the path over the bridge. Aria and Neve noticed no trout! Oh dear. It looks like we will be busy beavers next term.

Paper Planes Investigation

We have just recently finished an investigation on the distance paper planes travel! We wanted to find out which design made the paper plane fly the furtherest. We also looked at different assertions we could make and set up investigations to test this. They included different wingspans, the number of paper clips, staples and length of our planes. We measured the different outcomes and used Excel to make Scatter Plots so we could see the relationships.
The plane that flew the longest distance flew over 12 metres. There were a few that travelled over 10 metres. Interestingly, many of our planes all flew around 8 metres. Maybe it was the wind! Check out our photos.

Hi there everyone! Hopefully this means you got our letter! Just 4 days to go until the start of school - We bet that mum and dad are very excited about Monday!
We have a few more reminders about camp for you. A notice is going home on Monday with important details to remind you about.
* The Food Boxes are in the Office foyer for you to put your food donations in.
* You might want to bring a pair of goggles for the Gunge Fun!
* Dont chuck out any old clothing over the weekend...save them for the Mud Run.

Road Patrol Training
Constable Rei is coming up on Monday at 1.30pm to train you with the new posts. We are looking for two volunteers to be our road patrollers next week. DARE to make a choice!
Most of you would have seen DARE books arriving home and loads of extra homework! Its DARE time...ask your children about it if you missed the Parents Evening. We are learning lots about Decision making, Assertiveness, Respect and Esteem...in order for us to make the right choices as we become adults. So far we have been talking about all the things that makes us unique and finding out from others how special we are! We have our Unfolding Stories that we are getting busy to make...these need to be finished by Tuesday 16th December. Our activity day for DARE is on the 17th December...that's a Wednesday. Constable Heather Rei will be taking us through the Police Station and hopefully on to something really fun...

On Tuesday we had Beach Education at St Kilda Beach. We were lucky enough to have 8 life guards taking us and the weather was fabulous! We certainly had an awesome time with plenty of time in the water and playing in the sand. Many thanks to our brave parents who got in the water! Check these out!

Wow! What a fantastic day we had competing, cheering and visiting the "Tuck Shop!"
We had 33 of us competing in sprints, relays and long distance running. Over half of us made it through to the semi finals and 11 of us going through to the Otago Champs.

Athletics training is well underway in our Senior School. Room 1 children are really getting fast and fit, and practicing baton changes in their relay teams. Watch this space and we will post some photos of us running and working up a sweat!

Museum Helper Inspires Room 1 Children About the Chinese Dragons!

Today we visited the Otago Museum to discover more about our art study on the Chinese Dragons. We were inspired by the Emperor's clothes and many of the art works in the Chinese Dragons exhibition. Here are a few of our reflections on our learning:

Andy took us through the museum and we went to where the Emperor's old clothes were. He said that whenever the Emperor's robe got smelly or dirty he would throw it out into his store room and he would just get a new one. Maddy

He taught us really good old history. The Emperor had 9 dragons on his robe. He had one right inside his robe. He had thin gold in his robe. He was very rich and powerful. Grace.
China was divided into 'War-ing' states. When you go under the round door you are getting married. We decided that when we went back through the round door we were getting divorced especially if you had your thumbs on your head. Even though it was a rainy day we still learned about some bright and wonderful things. Molly

We saw scrolls that had dragons. On the scrolls there was a dragon father who was teaching him how to fly. The Emperor would give family members a robe with dragons on it. They would also have a panel on the front which described their rank in society. Maddy.

Hi everyone! We hope you had a superb holiday and welcome back Ben! We hope you are not too jet lagged. We cant wait to hear of all your escapades!
We have a busy week ahead - make sure you are ready and tuned in on Monday. We have a storyteller visiting us at the Church Hall on Tuesday and then we are all off to see the Chinese Dragons at the Otago Museum on Thursday. You will be receiving a notice about this on Monday.
We have had a desk change too. You may need to go on a 'desk hunt' for yours! We are also having athletics training every afternoon for the next few weeks...weather permitting of course. Please ensure that you are suitable dressed for this!
Lastly, and most importantly, dont forget your sunhats!

Last Wednesday, Opoho School hosted the annual Sports Afternoon Tea. A time where we recognise the invaluable dedication of our coaches and of course, all our players. We had children from T-Ball, Netball, Miniball, and Hockey. Alison Shanks - who was superb at the Beijing Olympics in the Cycling, came along to hand out certificates and sign many autographs!
As you can see, there was a fantastic afternoon tea put on too!

Vic and Alison from the Albatross Colony delivered their "Problem with Plastic" programme to all our classes last week. Room 5 joined us and Finn made a fantastic albatross. We learnt lots of interesting facts about plastics and how long it takes to break down in the sea. We found out that an apple takes about 2 months and a plastic container may take 1000 years!

Today we enjoyed a thrilling PE lesson at Logan Park High School. We started off first with Basketball skills but the highlight sure was the climbing wall. We had three rules:
1. Stay below 2 metres
2. Have four holding points at all time
3. Keep our hips to the wall
We thought it would be super easy...We were so wrong!

Often heard the name but wondered what its all about? Maddy went around and took these photos during Senior Discovery time a few weeks back. There is no Discovery until after the Production (Friday the 15th August) which will give us more time to get singing, dancing, acting and painting!

Production, production, production!
Mrs Gaffaney has hurt her back. Be extra nice to her! I've just super-glued my fingers together so hopefully they will be separated by the time Monday rolls around!
We are going to be learning a new Hip Hop Jump Jam - Superstar for our part. Singing practice every morning from 9.25am.
Get thinking about our sports stomp too!
Costumes due to be at school by Friday 25th July. Named bag please.
Everybody needs a black singlet or t.shirt and black shorts. Aliens need an alien costume. We cant wait to see what you have created!
Get your pencils sharpened, shoes polished and lunch boxes organised! We'll see you on Monday. Wahoo!!!!

Dundas Bush

The last Wednesday of Term 2 saw us down at Dundas Bush putting our learning about water testing into action. We tested in 2 different areas of the creek. The results were not good reading! Next term we will be looking at the results (we tested it 6 times) and work out the averages. Stay tuned for these. Instead...enjoy these photos we took on the day.

HOMEWORK! WEEK 8

Ha Ha! Nearly had you fooled! Can everyone have a go at bringing an odd shaped bottle to school next week. We are going to start our Measurement unit on Volume called, "Slosh, Dribble and Plop" next Wednesday and we will need all the bottles we can get! Mrs H

Suzie's Water Testing

Suzie came to talk to us about water testing. Suzie is from the Otago Regional Council. She goes around testing rivers and seas etc. She first talked to us about acidic liquids and how to test these using pH levels. we found out that lemon juice has a pH level of either 1 or 0! Our tap water from the school tap had a pH reading of 7. We then looked at the conductivity of our tap water using a conductivity meter. Our tap water had a reading of 120. When we added a tiny bit of salt and the conductivity went up to 810! We also looked at the type of living organisms we might find in polluted water and in clean water. The final test was checking the clarity of water. We did this by using a large cylinder - filling it up with water and then using magnets and looking through the bottom of it. We all had a lot of fun checking this out and couldnt believe the difference a 1/4 of a teaspoon of clay made to the clarity. We are now going to take this learning and test out the water of our creek at Dundas Bush, next Wednesday. It will be interesting to see how the creek water compares to our tap water...keep watching!

We all chose different presentation forms. Some were slideshows (using powerpoint), posters, books, interviews (in the form of a chat show) and speeches. Here are a few of our posters. • Pollutants that end up in these systems are carried out to sea.• Fresh clean water is a finite resource - there are ways we can modify our lifestyles to conserve and protect water.
• There are many places in the world that are limited with water resources due to geography and economic status.

The key questions are...
• How is water essential to life? How is water important for life, survival, to live?
• What goes down the drain and where does it go?
• Why do we need to modify our lifestyles to conserve and protect water?
• How can we modify our lifestyles to conserve and protect water?
• Why and how are some areas of the world limited in their water supply?
• What will the impact be if we keep using water and the supply continues to go down (diminish)?

We've had Miss Owen with us for the last 2 weeks (Miss Owen is a 2nd Year Student from Otago College of Education) and she has been teaching us Statistics like graphs. We've learned how to make cluster and outline graphs to show information. We are now busy making our own graphs from the questions we have made and the data we collected.

Our Journey to Bethune's Gully
On Friday the 8th February we went on a surprise journey to Bethune's Gully, stopping first at Lookout Point. We had a great time listening to the Storytellers, Kaitlin and Anna tell the story of the Tuatara and how it came to Dunedin and of course, checking out the spectacular views! Then it was down to the valley and fun, fun, fun at Bethune's Gully. A sausage sizzle, parachute games, a tramp just to name a few! We had an absolutely awesome time!
